Vacuum for the purge cycle is obtained from a vacuum pump and a vacuum
accumulator. A small vacuum pump, running for 75 to 90 seconds, creates a
strong vacuum in the vacuum accumulator. Then an air valve is energized for a
fraction of a second, exposing the printhead faceplate to the strong, accumulated
vacuum to suck debris and bubbles out of the printhead nozzles. With the air
valve once again de-energized, air is metered through the 7-mil orifice to
gradually release the vacuum at the faceplate.
