AIS Safety Messages

5.16.1

Introduction

You can send and receive messages via the VHF link, to a specified destination (MMSI) or all AIS-equipped ships
in the area. Messages can be sent to warn of safety of navigation, for example, an iceberg sighted. Routine messages
are also permitted. Short safety related messages are only an additional means to broadcast safety information. They
do not remove the requirements of the GMDSS.
To open the Safety message menu, which is where all phases of AIS safety messages are initiated, do the following:
The SAFETY MESSAGE menu contains the following items:
Filter:
Select category of messages to show in the Safety Message menu.
Name:
Each message has an individual name based on time of creation or time of receiving of message.
Status:
Display status of selected safety message.
Send:
Display date and time when message is sent.
Org:
Original message name is displayed here if selected safety message is reply for received message.
Vessel:
AIS target related information is displayed in this field.
Address:
Select how to send a safety message.
Msg Type:
Select message format.
Channel:
Specify channel for transmitting.
1. Display Menu/Info/Chart Menu in the guidance area then push the left button
to open the Main menu.
2. Select Safety Message from the menu then push the scrollwheel to show the
SAFETY MESSAGE dialog box.
