Measurements

BASICS

The two commands that trigger measurement cycles are:
INIT:IMM and INIT:CONT ON
INIT:IMM starts one measurement cycle during which the 2461
TYPE C is in the INITIATE state. When the measurement cycle
is complete, the instrument returns to the IDLE state.
INIT:CONT ON starts continuous measurements so that the
2461 stays in the initiate state.
When the instrument is in the initiate state, the only legal
commands that can be accepted without error are ABORt,
INIT:IMM, INIT:CONT OFF, READ? or MEAS?. These
commands either return the instrument to the idle state or
trigger one further measurement and then return to the idle
state.
There are 3 query commands defined by SCPI for retrieving
measurements and they are in hierarchical order.
The simplest command is the FETCH? command which causes
the 2461 to place a previously taken measurement into its
output buffer ready for the operator to read back the result.
The next command is the READ? command which triggers the
2461 and when the measurement is complete, places the result
in the output buffer as before. The READ? command is
equivalent to ABOR;INIT:IMM; FETCH?
The MEAS? command is the most complex command and
allows re-configuration of the measurement function, triggers
the instrument and, when the measurement is complete, places
the result into the output queue. The command is equivalent to
ABOR;CONF;INIT:IMM:READ?
The command MEAS:FREQ? causes the 2461 TYPE C to take
one frequency measurement and return the result. If the
command MEAS:PER? is now sent, the main function is
changed to period, a reading is triggered and the result is
returned. This command allows re-programming of the main
measurement function, and optionally the number of readings,
rapidly without changing any other conditions.

MULTIPLE MEASUREMENTS

It is possible to command the 2461 TYPE C to take multiple, or
array, type measurements using the CONFigure subsystem.
The CONF command is used standalone or with the MEAS?
Command.
