6.10.3 Stacking Configuration

A support ed Swit ch can change bet ween st acking and st andalone m ode by select ing t he Act ive
check box in t he Ba sic Se t t ing > St a ck ing > Configur a t ion screen.
Not e: When you change m odes, all configurat ions except user account s, but including
running configurat ion, config01 and config02 will be erased and t he Swit ch will
reboot wit h a new config01. Therefore, you should back up previous configurat ions
if you want t o reload t hem lat er.
St acking will aut om at ically choose a m ast er Swit ch in a st ack but you can overwrit e t hat by act ively
forcing a Swit ch t o becom e a m ast er Swit ch. I n t he St a ck ing Configu r a t ion screen, click Act ive
For ce M a st e r M ode t o choose t he m ast er Swit ch. This m ast er Swit ch will have t he highest priorit y
over all ot her st acked Swit ches even when t hey have sam e priorit y value.
I f t wo or m ore Swit ches have Act ive For ce M a st e r M ode enabled, t hen t he Swit ch will use
Syst e m Pr ior it y t o det erm ine which is m ast er. I f t hey have t he sam e Syst e m Pr ior it y, t hen t he
Swit ch wit h t he longest up- t im e is select ed. Upt im e is m easured in increm ent s of 10 m inut es. The
Swit ch wit h t he higher num ber of increm ent s is select ed. I f t hey have t he sam e upt im e, t hen t he
Swit ch wit h t he lowest MAC address will be t he m ast er.

Not e: Mast er elect ion occurs when a st acking port link st at us changes ( up / down) . The
link st at us changes when ( for exam ple) :
- a st acking port cable is disconnect ed
- a Swit ch in t he st ack reboot s ( as happens aft er you change st acking m ode t o
st andalone)
- you add a Swit ch t o t he st ack or
- a Swit ch in t he st ack shut s down.
Use t he following procedure t o creat e a st ack:

Select a Swit ch t o be t he m ast er. Change it s m ode t o st acking m ode. You will see a m essage asking
you t o confirm t he change. Click OK t o confirm and t he Swit ch will reboot aut om at ically using a
new config01.
