44.3.2 VRRP Parameters

This sect ion describes t he VRRP param et ers.
44.3.2.1 Advertisement Interval
The m ast er rout er sends out Hello m essages t o let t he ot her backup rout ers know t hat it is st ill up
and running. The t im e int erval bet ween sending t he Hello m essages is t he advert isem ent int erval.
By default , a Hello m essage is sent out every second.
I f t he backup rout ers do not receive a Hello m essage from t he m ast er rout er aft er t his int erval
expires, it is assum ed t hat t he m ast er rout er is down. Then t he backup rout er wit h t he highest
priorit y becom es t he m ast er rout er.
Not e: All rout ers part icipat ing in t he virt ual rout er m ust use t he sam e advert isem ent
int erval.
44.3.2.2 Priority
Configure t he priorit y level ( 1 t o 254) t o set which backup rout er t o t ake over in case t he m ast er
rout er goes down. The backup rout er wit h t he highest priorit y will t ake over. The priorit y of t he
VRRP rout er t hat owns t he I P address( es) associat ed wit h t he virt ual rout er is 255.
44.3.2.3 Preempt Mode
I f t he m ast er rout er is unavailable, a backup rout er assum es t he role of t he m ast er rout er. However,
when anot her backup rout er wit h a higher priorit y j oins t he net work, it will preem pt t he lower
priorit y backup rout er t hat is t he m ast er. Disable preem pt m ode t o prevent t his from happening.
By default , a layer 3 device wit h t he sam e I P address as t he virt ual rout er will becom e t he m ast er
rout er regardless of t he preem pt m ode.
44.3.3 Configuring VRRP Parameters
Aft er you set up an I P int erface, configure t he VRRP param et ers in t he VRRP Con figu r a t ion
screen.
