23.5.1 Types of MVR Ports

I n MVR, a source port is a port on t he Swit ch t hat can send and receive m ult icast t raffic in a
m ult icast VLAN while a receiver port can only receive m ult icast t raffic. Once configured, t he Swit ch
m aint ains a forwarding t able t hat m at ches t he m ult icast st ream t o t he associat ed m ult icast group.
23.5.2 MVR Modes
You can set your Swit ch t o operat e in eit her dynam ic or com pat ible m ode.
I n dynam ic m ode, t he Swit ch sends I GMP leave and j oin report s t o t he ot her m ult icast devices
( such as m ult icast rout ers or servers) in t he m ult icast VLAN. This allows t he m ult icast devices t o
updat e t he m ult icast forwarding t able t o forward or not forward m ult icast t raffic t o t he receiver
port s.
I n com pat ible m ode, t he Swit ch does not send any I GMP report s. I n t his case, you m ust m anually
configure t he forwarding set t ings on t he m ult icast devices in t he m ult icast VLAN.
23.5.3 How MVR Works
The following figure shows a m ult icast t elevision exam ple where a subscriber device ( such as a
com put er) in VLAN 1 receives m ult icast t raffic from t he st ream ing m edia server, S, via t he Swit ch.
Mult iple subscriber devices can connect t hrough a port configured as t he receiver on t he Swit ch.
When t he subscriber select s a t elevision channel, com put er A sends an I GMP report t o t he Swit ch
t o j oin t he appropriat e m ult icast group. I f t he I GMP report m at ches one of t he configured MVR
m ult icast group addresses on t he Swit ch, an ent ry is creat ed in t he forwarding t able on t he Swit ch.
This m aps t he subscriber VLAN t o t he list of forwarding dest inat ions for t he specified m ult icast
t raffic.
When t he subscriber changes t he channel or t urns off t he com put er, an I GMP leave m essage is sent
t o t he Swit ch t o leave t he m ult icast group. The Swit ch sends a query t o VLAN 1 on t he receiver port
( in t his case, an uplink port on t he Swit ch) . I f t here is anot her subscriber device connect ed t o t his
port in t he sam e subscriber VLAN, t he receiving port will st ill be on t he list of forwarding dest inat ion
for t he m ult icast t raffic. Ot herwise, t he Swit ch rem oves t he receiver port from t he forwarding t able.
