1.1.3 Gigabit Ethernet to the Desktop

The Swit ch is an ideal solut ion for sm all net works which dem and high bandwidt h for a group of
heavy t raffic users. You can connect com put ers and servers direct ly t o t he Swit ch's port or connect
ot her swit ches t o t he Swit ch. Use t he opt ional 10 Gigabit uplink m odule t o provide high speed
access t o a dat a server and t he I nt ernet . The uplink m odule support s a fiber- opt ic connect ion which
alleviat es t he dist ance lim it at ions of copper cabling.
I n t his exam ple, all com put ers can share high- speed applicat ions on t he server and access t he
I nt ernet . To expand t he net work, sim ply add m ore net working devices such as swit ches, rout ers,
com put ers, print servers and so on.

A VLAN ( Virt ual Local Area Net work) allows a physical net work t o be part it ioned int o m ult iple logical
net works. St at ions on a logical net work belong t o one or m ore groups. Wit h VLAN, a st at ion cannot
direct ly t alk t o or hear from st at ions t hat are not in t he sam e group( s) unless such t raffic first goes
t hrough a rout er.
