CAUTION:
Although the IBM module is safe, there may be other Laser modules in the system link that may
not be safe under all conditions. For this reason it is advised to never view the end of the optical
fiber cable or open receptacle. However, some repair activities of optical fiber cable assemblies
may require the use of special viewing devices. In such cases, disconnecting both ends of the
fiber is mandatory. As an additional precaution, viewing equipment with the proper Laser viewing
protection filters must be used.
The label shown is required by IEC 825 to be affixed to the system, and is located inside the
central processor complex (CPC).
4 Connecting the ES CONnection channel
cable(s)
1. Connect the ES CONnection channel cable
to the I/O device.
2. Connect the other end of the cable to the
correct connector on the ESCON card.
Note: Use Charts "Locating the correct
CHPID on the card." on page 6-36
for the feature you are working with.
Note: Ensure that the fiber optic
connector is positioned correctly
when installing it into a card
receptacle. The connector is keyed
by two beveled edges; (see
drawing). The connector bevels
should always face to the left. The
receptacle shell can be cracked if
the connector is installed in the
reversed position.
Note: When installing a fiber optic
connector into a card receptacle,
use the plastic cover removed from
the connector to store the protective
plug that was removed from the
receptacle.
3. If other I/O devices are attached to this
chain, connect them together.
Repeat this step for all ESCON cards.
