7.2 Cutting Action and Knife Components

Use the following tables to determine the cause of the cutting action and knife component problems and the
recommended repair procedure.
Problem
Symptom: Ragged or Uneven Cutting of Crop
Knife hold-downs not adjusted
properly
Knife sections or guards are worn
or broken
Knife is not operating at
recommended speed
Ground speed too fast for reel speed
Reel fingers not lifting crop properly
ahead of knife
Cutterbar too high
Header angle too flat
Bent knife, causing binding of cutting
parts
Cutting edge of guards not close
enough, or parallel to knife sections
Tangled / tough to cut crop
Reel too far back
Loose knife drive belt
Symptom: Knife Plugging
Reel too high or too far forward
Ground speed too slow
Loose knife drive belt
Improper knife hold-down adjustment

TROUBLESHOOTING
Solution
Adjust hold-downs
Replace all worn and broken
cutting parts
Check engine speed of windrower
Reduce ground speed or increase reel
speed
Adjust reel position / finger pitch
Lower cutting height
Steepen header angle
Straighten a bent knife and
align guards
Align guards
Install stub guards
Move reel forward
Adjust knife drive belt tension
Lower reel or move reel rearward
Increase ground speed
Adjust drive belt tension
Adjust hold-down
