Using a Small-tip Soldering Iron

Use a small pencil type 10-15 watt soldering iron. A sharp, pointed tip is
essential when soldering surface mount components. Keep the tip of the iron
clean and well tinned at all times. Many areas on the printed circuit board are
close together and care must be given not to form solder bridges. Solder bridges
may occur if you accidentally touch an adjacent foil, particularly a previously
soldered connection, using too much solder, or dragging the iron across adjacent
foils. If a solder short occurs, remove it with your hot iron. Use only lead-free
rosin core solder. For a good soldering job, the areas being soldered must be
heated sufficiently so that the solder flows freely.
Use small diameter solder, (e.g., 0.05 or 0.031 inch diameter).
1 Start by applying a small amount of flux to all pads on the module. The flux
2 Apply a small amount of solder paste from a syringe to each pad.
