Coaxial Shunt Resistor and PD1000-60002 Protection Probe
During normal operation the voltage across the 10 m Coaxial Shunt is limited
to under 10V. However, in case of a fault (e.g. when the shunt resistor is blown
open) almost the complete voltage the capacitor is charged to can appear across
the shunt. As the internal resistance of the capacitor is very low, the current can
reach extremely high levels. This would immediately destroy the oscilloscope.
To prevent the destruction of the oscilloscope, a protection probe is required. It is
acceptable that the protection probe may be destroyed during a fault as this can
be replaced and is much less expensive than the oscilloscope.

Use the 0.56 N-m (5 lb-in) 5/16 in. SMA Break-over torque
wrench (provided with the PD1500A system) to tighten the SMA
connector on the cable to the PD1000-60002 Protection Probe.
Failure to do so might cause extensive ringing in the DPT
measurements.
