Custom Gate Drive Resistors
Keysight's PD1500A Double Pulse Test System provides eight different Gate
Drive modules – four Low-Side modules and four High-Side modules:
Low-Side Gate Drive Modules
PD1000-66540 No Gate Resistors installed
on the module. After installing custom gate
resistors, the module must have Gate
Resistance Rg calibrated to store the
resistor value in the module's EEPROM.

PD1000-66544 10  Gate Resistor
(2 @ 4.99 ) installed on module
PD1000-66546 100  Gate Resistor
(2 @ 50 ) installed on module
Which modules should you use or how do you select a gate drive resistor? Many
FETs and IGBTs have an internal gate resistor, but an external gate drive resistor
plays a crucial role in limiting noise and ringing in the gate drive path. Parasitic
inductances and capacitances, high dv/dt and di/dt can cause unwanted
oscillations and other behavior unless an appropriate-sized gate drive resistor is
used.

Custom Gate Resistor Test Modules

Low-Side Gate Drive Module PD1000-66540 and High-Side Module
PD1000-66541 do not have gate resistors pre-installed. This allows you to install
gate resistors of any value necessary for the tests you are performing. You must
solder appropriate resistors onto both modules.
Refer to Figure 28 below. The actual Gate Drive Resistors are SMD resistors
labeled RG1 and RG2. RG1 is an Imperial size 1206 (metric 3216, L = 3.20 mm,
W = 1.60 mm) and is used in measuring the gate drive current. RG2 is an imperial
size 0603 (metric 1608, L = 1.60 mm, W = 0.80 mm); it is smaller and will
destruct earlier in case of over current to protect the oscilloscope and probe.
Both resistors must have the same resistance.
Use identical resistors on the Low-Side and High-Side Gate Drive modules–two
resistors on each module. This creates a voltage divider that protects the
differential probe.
High-Side Gate Drive Modules

resistors, the module must have Gate Resistance
Rg calibrated to store the resistor value in the
module's EEPROM.
