Drop Legs

Crop Cruisers run dual reduction chain driven drop
legs. Drive is transferred from the differential through
drive shafts to the input shaft of the drop leg. A
Super 120 HT drive chain is between the input shaft
and the middle idler shaft. The bottom chain is a
Super 140 HT and joins the idler shaft to the output
axle shaft.
The drop legs have an oil bath sump which the
chains run in and carry the oil to the bearings. The
idler shaft bearing housings have sumps so that the
bearings always have oil lubrication.
The oil level can be checked by removing the level
plug. There are breathers on top of the drop legs.
This allows the oil inside to expand and contract
without pressurising or creating a vacuum in the
drop leg housing. This breather must be cleaned at
regular service intervals.

Drive Chain Maintenance
Crop Cruisers are fitted with two size quality Tsubaki
drive chains to transmit power to the wheels. These
chains are of the highest quality and are designed
for a long trouble free life, however, proper care and
maintenance of the drive system must be adhered to
for maximum chain and sprocket life. The top chain is
120 Super HT chain while the bottom drive chain is
140 Super HT.
Even the best chains eventually stretch over time
and become loose however. The maximum allowable
chain stretch is 1.5%. When this occurs the chains
must be replaced. The chains' service life is gauged
by total stretch. There is no tensioning mechanism
because when a chain stretches it no longer aligns
correctly with the drive cogs and therefore should
be replaced to prevent excessive wear on the teeth
of the drive sprockets.
