Using the 5800v2 and 5800-100G to provide high accuracy
external timing
Your 5800 instrument can be used as a highly accurate external timing reference for
another device via one of the following:
The EXT_CLK (white) cable provided on the Multi Access SMA Timing Cable
Adapter, which is connected to the EXT CLK connector on the 5800v2.
The 10 MHz OUT connector on the optional TEM Module if 1) the module is
connected to your 5800v2, 2) a GNSS antenna is connected to the module, and
3) the module's rubidium oscillator has been tuned to a highly precise synchroni-
zation source. 5800-100G has a built-in GNSS receiver.

Preparing for optical testing

Before testing on optical circuits using the instrument, you should be familiar with the
following concepts.

Considerations

Before testing on optical circuits using the instrument, consider the following:
Only use the optical adapters and transceivers that shipped with your instrument,
or optics that you purchased from Viavi as accessories. A list of Viavi supported
optics shipped with your instrument.
Details concerning the transceiver used for the currently selected application are
available on the Interface setup tab.

WARNING: HAZARDOUS LIGHT EXPOSURE
Do not look directly into the optical output of the unit or at the output of any
optical cable or transceiver connected to the unit. If a fiber optic cable is
removed from a transmitting connector or transceiver, cover the connector
with the safety cap to prevent inadvertent exposure to the laser output.
WARNING: RISK OF DAMAGE TO TRANSCEIVERS
When connecting the instrument to optical circuits using a transceiver, do not
apply optical power that exceeds the maximum optical power published as
permitted by the transceiver manufacturer.
If you do not know the optical power of the applied signal, use an attenuator
when you connect to the circuit for the first time, then remove the attenuator if
you determine that it was not necessary. Otherwise, the transceiver can be
permanently damaged due to the "hot signal".
A variety of attenuators are available for purchase as options when you order
your instrument.
