Optical Connectors Handling Precaution
•
Typical optical connectors are rated for 500 mating cycles. Limiting the number of
connections will prolong the OTDR connector's lifetime.
•
To ensure accurate and repeatable OTDR measurements, OTDR's optical
connector must be cleaned and in good condition.
•
SmartOTDR's protective cover primary purpose is to protect the optical connector
ferrule end face from scratch and pitting defects. It does not protect the ferrule
end face from dust contamination. We strongly recommend inspecting the OTDR
optical connector with a fiber inspection probe before using it and clean it if
necessary.
Laser Safety instructions
The provisions contained in two standards define the safety procedures to be observed
both by users and by manufacturers when utilizing laser products:
•
IEC 60825-1: 2014 - Safety of laser products – Part 1: Classification of products,
requirements and user guidelines.
•
FDA 21 CFR § 1040.10 - Performance standards for light-emitting products -
Laser products.
Due to the range of possible wavelengths, power values and injection characteristics of
a laser beam, the risks inherent in its usage vary. The laser classes form groups repre-
senting different safety thresholds.

Standards IEC 60825-1: 2014 and FDA21CFR§1040.10:
