Microprocessor Installation Tool A
To remove a microprocessor and heat sink, complete the following steps:
Step 1.
Read the safety information and installation guidelines, see "Safety" on page v and "Installation
guidelines" on page 38.
Step 2.
Turn off the server (see "Turning off the server" on page 23) and all attached peripheral devices.
Disconnect all power cords; then, disconnect all external cables as necessary to replace the device.
Step 3.
Remove the server cover (see "Removing the server top cover" on page 216).
Step 4.
Disconnect any cables that impede access to the heat sink and microprocessor.
Step 5.
If you are replacing a microprocessor on the system board, remove the microprocessor and
memory expansion tray (see "Removing the microprocessor and memory expansion tray assembly"
on page 292).
Step 6.
Remove the DIMM air baffle, if one is installed (see "Removing the DIMM air baffle" on page 220).
Step 7.
Remove the microprocessor air baffle, if one is installed (see "Removing the microprocessor air
baffle" on page 219).
Step 8.
Remove the heat sink.
a.
Use a screwdriver to loosen the captive screw on one side of the heat sink to break the seal
with the microprocessor.
b.
Loosen all the captive screws on the heat sink, rotating each screw one full turn until each
screw is loose.
