Glossary

ECDIS900: ECDIS system developed by MARIS.
MBA: Master Bridge Assistant. Software application installed on board allowing
the navigator ordering and updating paper and electronic charts and publications and
ordering weather and current forecasts.
MDS: Maritime Digital Service. Same application and services than MBA which
is the new version of MDS.
Voyage Optimization module: This module is an ECDIS900 module. This
module is integrated in ECDIS900 and gives the possibility to calculate the optimal route
from the ship model, weather and current forecasts and ECDIS electronic charts.
VDS4000: VDS4000 designates ECDIS900 with the Voyage Optimization
module activated. Note that ECDIS900 is delivered by default with the Voyage
Optimization module deactivated. The activation is done remotely.
NAS, Network Attached Storage: high capacity storage device installed on
the LAN.
Log4000: long term storage system installed on board. It consists of a NAS and
a software called Log4000. The Log4000 includes a report module sending data to shore.
MCP, MARIS CUSTOMER PORTAL: MCP is the MARIS WEB site available for all
MARIS customers, ship and ship owners and providing access to all data related to the
ship including charts, services and installation reports and Log4000. MCP is also an
efficient performance monitoring and report tool accessible by the ship owners
VDS, Voyage Decision System: VDS designates the complete system
including VDS4000 and Log4000 installed on board and MCP services on shore. VDS is
addressing the needs of energy saving for the ship and also for the ship owner.
VDS4000 is installed on a PC on board the ship with the proper ship model.
Weather and current forecasts are received every day.
The navigator plots the route to be optimized in VDS4000. Alternatively the navigator may
import in VDS4000 the route from existing ECDIS.
VDS4000 calculates the optimal route from the ship model, the forecasts and the ENC charts
used on board.
After the navigator has confirmed the calculation, the route is exported to ECDIS and used as
active route.
