7. Does the remote host have the lpd daemon running?
Check using ps -aux | grep lpd (BSD) or ps -e | grep lpd (System
V).
8. Have you set up the privilege files /etc/hosts.equiv and/or /etc/
hosts.lpd (BSD) using lpsystem (on most system V machines) on
both ends of the printer system (the remote printer host and the
local host)?
Look at the files on both remote printer host and local for entries
for both hostnames.
9. Is the remote printer correctly enabled and set to accept print
requests on the remote host?
Use the lpc (BSD) or lpstat (System V) commands to determine
this.
10. Are the baud rate settings etc. set up correctly on the UNIX
system that the printer is attached to?
Check the /etc/printcap file (BSD) or use the lpadmin command
(System V).
11. Does the device (in the /dev directory on the remote printer host)
have the correct permissions?
Type ls -l. The permission should be rw-rw-rw. If not, use chmod
666 /dev/device_name.
12. If using both System V and BSD operating systems, have you set
the System V machine to use 3 digit request codes when printing
to printers attached to the BSD machine?
Use the lpadmin command on the System V machine with the
-ob3 option, or the lpsystem command with the -t bsd option,
whichever is applicable.
13. If you are using or printing to a System V machine, have you set
up the remote host using lpsystem?
Please note that many of the printer setup functions require superuser privileges (i.e.
lpadmin, lpc etc), so you must log in as a superuser to configure the UNIX printer
system.
