Troubleshooting The UNIX Print System

Most of the information in the remainder of this chapter is documented in your
operating system manuals, so if in difficulty refer to the manuals (especially as
specific UNIX operating systems often have subtle differences to trap the unwary!).
The UNIX print system varies according to the UNIX operating system that you are
using. The UNIX System V operating system has an enhanced printing system that is
backwards compatible with the BSD operating system printer system. Most new
operating systems are System V. The older SunOs operating systems are an example
of a BSD operating system, but the newer Sun Solaris operating systems are System
V compatible.
The following table provides a summary of the differences :-
The first thing you should do if TeemTalk will not print is to attempt to print to the
printer directly from the UNIX operating system.
1. Create or find a suitable file to print.
2. Use the lp -dprinter_name or lpr -Pprinter_name command to
print to a known printer
3. If the file does not arrive at the printer within a few minutes, use
the lpq -Pprinter_name or lpstat -dprinter_name command to
determine the state of the printer queue.
