Dial-up Data Type Configuration

When the data type is Dial-up, the second B channel is used to allow the extender to act as an ISDN Termi-
nal Adapter (TA). The extender provides support for the AT command set, which you may use to establish a
PPP connection to another data device. For example, with the remote EXTender connected to a Windows 9x
PC and the office unit connected to a Windows NT server, you can use Windows dial-up networking to
establish a data connection between the remote and office site.
Additionally, the devices on both ends do not have to be EXTenders. Instead of dialing directly to the office
site, the Remote Module could be used to place a call to an Internet Service Provider as the first link in
establishing a Virtual Private Network between the remote and office sites. Also, instead of using the Office
Modules to terminate data calls, the Remote Modules might be configured to dial into a router, which would
then connect them directly to the corporate LAN.

Configuring For Windows NT/2000 or Windows 9x Dial-Up Networking

To use the Extender with Windows 9x dial-up networking or when the unit is connected to a Windows NT
server, you must connect the PC and the EXTender Module as described in "Connecting the COM port" sec-
tion. You must also ensure that the Module's COM port is properly configured for Dial-up Data Type and the
correct COM port settings are configured to match the PC COM port. Next, a driver for the EXTender must
be selected on the PC. The EXTender provides a subset of the Motorola Bitsurfr functionality and the AT
command set (see "A - AT Command Set" on page 108), so the Motorola Bitsurfr driver included with Win-
dows 9x should be installed as follows:
1.
Open the Control Panel on the desktop.
2.
Open the Modems icon in the Control Panel.
3.
Select Add.
4.
(On Windows 95 only) Select Other for modem type. Press NEXT.
5.
Check the box for Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list. Press NEXT.
6.
Select Motorola for the manufacturer.
7.
Select BitSURFR as the model. Press NEXT.
8.
Select the COM Port on the PC that will be used. Press NEXT.
9.
Select FINISH.
10. Return to the Modem Properties window General page.
11. Select the newly added Motorola BitSURFR entry.
12. Press Properties
13. Set the Maximum Speed to match the COM port data rate configured on the EXTender.
Normally, you will want to have the COM port speed set to the maximum possible value (115200 bps).
However, at this setting, when there is a large amount of data traffic flowing between the EXTenders and the
PBX connection is established, there may be a small degradation in voice quality. If you experience such
problems, reduce the Maximum Speed and the EXTender's COM port data rate to 57600.
