Software Upgrading

Introduction

The EXTender 3000 allows you to perform software (firmware) upgrading in the field. The two software
upgrade methods for the Remote and Office modules, are:
The Terminal Configuration Menu Serial S-Record Upgrade, which requires obtaining a soft copy
of the new release.
The ISDN Connection Upgrade, which requires a Remote Module connecting with an Office Mod-
ule.
The latest software upgrade is stored internally in the non-volatile FLASH memory of either the Office
or Remote Module.

Obtaining the Upgrade File

To download new software when using the Terminal Configuration Menu Serial Upgrade, you need a soft
file that contains the latest software release. This file is in a special format called S-Record and is available
from MCK.
The file name should contain the product family, software version number, and end with the extension .hex.
(e.g. 9U203R1.hex).

Upgrading using the Terminal Configuration Menu

This upgrade process applies to both the Office and Remote Modules and should take place when you have
access to the Terminal Configuration Menu.
Please refer to the section Terminal Configuration Menu Operation – Accessing the ETI/TTI Menu if you
require further information on how to access the Configuration Menus.
It is recommended to use either the Dial-up or Ethernet menu access, even if it means you must temporary
change the Data Type. Using these menu access methods allows a higher COM data rate which greatly
reduces the time to perform the serial upgrade.
Warning! Ensure you have hardware flow control enabled on the COM port of your PC or the serial
upgrade will fail.
1.
From the Main Menu, select the Configure System menu option.
2.
From the System menu, select Software Upgrade. The command will initiate the upgrade process. The
module will display the following messages:
Last chance to stop... The Flash memory will be erased.
Do you want to continue?
3.
Enter Y to continue, any other key to abort. The following message will be displayed:
Please wait while flash memory is being erased...
The erase process takes about 15 seconds. The module will then display:
Successfully erased
