Bridge Configuration

The Extender's bridge works by building a table (the Local Address Table) of all the MAC addresses it finds
in the source MAC address field of packets received on the Ethernet port. When a packet is received, the
bridge than sees if the packet's destination MAC address is present in the local address table. If it is, then
both the source and destination are connected to the same local LAN segment and the Extender does not
need to send the packet across the ISDN link. If no match is found, however, the Extender will forward the
packet to the unit on the other side of the ISDN connection.
Each time a packet is received on the Ethernet interface, the Extender looks at the source MAC address
present in the packet. If that address is already present in the local address table, its lifetime timer is reset to
the Local Address Timeout value. Otherwise, a new entry for that MAC address is added to the Local
Address Table and its lifetime timer is set to the Local Address Timeout.

Setting Bridging

From the Main Menu, press 4 to access the Configure Bridging menu.
The following sub-menu will appear:
1. Local Address Timeout (minutes)

2. Broadcast Filtering

3. IPX Spoofing
4. IPX Spoofing Timeout (minutes)
5. Exit

Local Address Timeout

This Local Address Timeout is used to specify the length of time, in minutes, a PC workstation address will
remain in the LAN address table without a packet having been received from that address.
The default for Local Address Timeout is 5 minutes. Valid entries are between 1 and 255 minutes.
From the Configure Bridging menu:
1.
Select Local Address Timeout.
2.
Enter the amount of time and press Enter.
Broadcast Filtering
By default, the Office Module will not forward broadcast Ethernet packets (except for IP ARP and BOOTP/
DACP packets) to the Remote Module to reduce data traffic across the ISDN connection.
Be aware that if Broadcast Filtering is disabled and DOD has been set to Transmit/Receive Any on the
Remote Module, the ISDN connection will probably remain up permanently. Therefore, unless there is a
specific application that would require the filtering to be disabled, we recommend that the Broadcast Filter-
ing be enabled. By default, Broadcast Filtering be Enabled.
1.
Select Broadcast Filtering.
The following sub-menu will appear:
1. Disabled.
2. Enabled.
2.
Highlight the desired option and press Enter to disable or enable broadcast filtering.
