Setting Voice Parameters

The Set Voice Parameters menu allows you to access the following sub-menus:
Set Voice Coder
Set Phone Companding
Set Pots Companding
Setting Stac Compression
Set Silence Detection
To access the Set Voice Parameters menu, follow these instructions:
1.
From the Go Online menu, press NEXT until the Set Voice Parameters menu appears
2.
Press OK to advance to the Set Voice Coder menu.

Setting the Voice Coder

For the Serial data type the extender takes data received on the Com port and multiplexes it with the digital
phone voice and signaling over the first ISDN B channel. You can select a voice coder to reduce the amount
of data required to transfer voice across the ISDN B channel, thereby increasing the amount of data that you
can transfer with the COM port. Choosing a voice coder with a lower data rate will enable you to set the
serial port to a higher baud rate without affecting the voice quality.
The Dialup and Ethernet data types use the second ISDN B channel so choice of voice coder will have no
affect on the dialup or Ethernet data rates.
If you really need to increase amount of data you can transfer using the serial port you should make sure that
Silence Detection is also enabled (below).
There are two types of voice compression algorithms that can be selected, ADPCM32 or G.729A. All voice
data is transmitted via the first ISDN B channel.
ADPCM32: This voice coder has excellent voice quality but requires a higher data rate than G.729a. Select
this option unless you are running in Serial Data mode and want to improve the Serial Data capacity over the
ISDN line.
G.729A: This voice coder has a much lower data rate than ADPCM but the voice quality is not as good as
ADPCM. Choose this option only if you need to reduce the amount of data you send over the ISDN line.
1.
From the Go Online menu, press NEXT until the Set Voice Parameters menu appears.
2.
Press OK to advance to the Set Voice Coder menu.
3.
Press OK to access this menu. The telephone displays Voice Coder: xxxx, where "xxxx" is the current
setting.
4.
Press PRV and NEXT to scroll through the options. The choices are ADPCM and G.729.
5.
Press OK to accept the displayed value and return to the Set Voice Coder menu.

Setting the Phone Companding

This menu item lets you change the companding mode the remote extender uses to encode and decode voice
data it sends and receives from the digital phone respectively.
Note: This option should not normally need to be changed from its default value. Setting this option to the
wrong value for the phone you are using will severely degrade the voice quality in both inbound and out-
bound directions.
