Bridging

The EXTender's bridge works by building a table (the Local Address Table) of all of the MAC addresses it
finds in the source MAC address field of packets received on the Ethernet port. When a packet is received,
the bridge then sees if the packet's destination MAC address is present in the local address table. If it is, then
both the source and destination are connected to the same local LAN segment and the EXTender does not
need to send the packet across the ISDN link. If no match is found, however, the EXTender will forward the
packet to the unit on the other side of the ISDN connection.
Each time a packet is received on the Ethernet interface the EXTender looks at the source MAC address
present in the packet. If that address is already present in the local address table, its lifetime timer is reset to
the Local Address Timeout value. Otherwise, a new entry for that MAC address is added to the Local
Address Table and its lifetime timer is set to the Local Address Timeout.
If at any time, a Local Address Table entry's timeout expires (indicating that no packets have since been
received from that system), that entry is removed from the Local Address Table. Any packets that have that
address as their destination will once again be sent across the ISDN link.
The range for the Local Address Timeout is 1 to 255 minutes.
The default value is 5 minutes.
