Tools for Finishing Models
Finishing a model to conform to the design specifications requires a variety of
tools. Each model design has unique geometry which determines the shape of
the picks, knives, and sanding blocks best suited to that model.
Tools for P400-ABS Plastic (ABS)
Stratasys recommends the following tools for finishing parts made from ABS:
A needle-nose pliers

A good electric detail sander (e.g. Dremil Sander)
l
A large variety of metal files
l
A variety of foam sanding blocks
l
120 grit sandpaper
l
320 grit sandpaper
l
A variety of dental picks
l
A hot knife for filling gaps with raw material
l
Gap-filling super-glue
l
A sandable gap-filling primer
l
Plastic welding glue such as ProWeld ABS Glue
l
A good sealing compound such as epoxy
l
An Auto body repair putty such as Bondo
l
Mineral spirits for removing paint from ABS parts
l
Isopropyl alcohol for cleaning parts
l
The model finishing area must be well ventilated, and should have a
good dust collector installed.
The operator should always wear safety glasses and a dust mask when
removing supports or sanding parts.
It is extremely important to keep the sanders and files clean.
