FDM Head
Liquefies the thermoplastic modeling material and extrudes it into precise layers
that fuse to form the complete model.
FDM Liquefier
Melts the thermoplastic modeling material to an exact temperature to form the
model. It is part of the FDM head.
FDM Tip
The interchangeable nozzle at the end of the FDM liquefier. The inside and outside
diameters of the tips determine the minimum and maximum line widths.
Filament Out Sensor
This sensor is located inside the dry box of the FDM. It tells the FDM when fila-
ment runs out. When the filament runs out, the message "OUT OF FILAMENT"
flashes on the keypad, and the system pauses until more material is added.
Foundation
The foam-like material used as the surface for building the part. It is a foam-like
material—light red or maize for ABS, and blue for other materials. Light red or
yellow material is made up polystyrene, and blue is made of styrofoam.
Gain
A value proportional to the flow of material.
Go to Origin Button
Pressing this button, plus the rapid button, moves the head to the coordinates X=0,
and Y=0. With the Z axis lights on, htis button plus the rapid button moves the Z-
stage to its upper most position.
GUI
Graphical User Interface—the menus, buttons, fields, and graphics display in a
software product.
Home
A head position for the FDM hardware. It is the mechanical X=0, Y=0, Z=0
position (the left corner of the modeling envelope).
Homing
Moves the FDM head to the home position. Homing readies the FDM for model
building, which includes initializing head location, XYZ starting coordinates, and
purging of material from the tip. This is done automatically when a file is sent to
the FDM hardware, before the model is built.
IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification)
A neutral file format used to exchange geometrical and textual data.
