Insert a press plate of the proper size and press the inner bearing cup toward
the inside of the housing. Retain the shims located under the bearing cup
(Figure
229). If the shims are damaged, replace with new shims of the
same thickness.
1. Inspect the differential parts for damage before assembling.
A. If any bearings are damaged they must be replaced with new ones.
Replace all the bearings that were removed.
B. Check the ring, pinion, and spur gear for abnormal wear or damage;
replace the components that are worn.
C. Inspect the housings for cracks and external damage that could affect
the operation of the axle assembly.
D. Inspect the differential case for wear in the side gear and pinion mate
area. Replace the case if its machined areas are scored or if the pinion
mate shaft fits loosely in the bore.

2. Press new pinion inner bearing cone onto the pinion drive gear. Support the
bearing on the inner cup of the bearing only when installing
