To protect a tape or floppy disk from
having data erased accidentally.
The rectangular cutout on one edge of
a floppy disk.
If this notch is
covered with special tape that comes
with the disk, new information cannot
be written on the disk.
In this way,
data on the floppy disk is protected
from alteration.
