4 Installing Mass Storage Devices

Introduction

This chapter describes how to install the internal Hot Swap SCSI hard disk drives
and the optional DAT tape drive. The external SCSI drive connection
requirements are provided later in this chapter.
NOTE SCSI repeater electronics inside the HP NetServer's peripheral
bay isolate the internal LVD (Low-Voltage Differential) SCSI
channel from non-LVD devices inside the chassis, typically the
(DAT) tape drive. A 68-pin to 50-pin SCSI adapter is also used
to connect SCSI bus A to the narrow-SCSI tape drive. Other
single-ended (SE) SCSI devices may be connected in place of
this (DAT) tape drive. If your system did not come configured
with a DAT tape drive, the cable is terminated. The terminator
is clamped to the rear of the filler panel inserted in place of the
tape drive.

Drive Addressing

The Hot Swap hard disk drive bays are assigned SCSI IDs 0 and 1, and the
embedded controller holds ID 7. The left hot swap bay (center) is ID 0 by default
and the right is ID 1, as you face the front of the chassis. However, this can be
changed using the Setup Utility. See Chapter 10, "Configuring the HP NetServer."
This also holds true for the Hot Swap drive bays when using a SCSI controller
inserted into the I/O Baseboard. Setting the ID jumpers on the SCSI drive's
controller board is not required.

Hardware Mirroring

You may choose to mirror hard drives in the HP NetServer's hot swap bays
(RAID 1). However, doing this through the software slows down disk access time,
but using hardware mirroring can help speed up disk access time.
