7 Installing Additional Processors

Introduction

This chapter provides the instructions for installing additional processors in the
HP NetServer LXr 8500. The HP NetServer supports up to eight processor
modules (8-way) on two processor carrier boards mounted on the processor
baseboard. See Figures 7-1 through 7-3.
The standard configuration (4-way) only uses the first four processor slots on the
left processor carrier board mounted on the processor baseboard. The minimum
configuration only provides one processor module installed in the first slot and
terminators in all the remaining slots (3 terminators on the left and 4 terminators
in all slots on the right processor carrier). If the HP NetServer comes configured
as an 8-way with five or more processors modules installed in the both processor
carrier boards, then the remaining unused slots in the right processor carrier board
must have terminators installed. See Tables 7-1 and 7-2.
The HP NetServer supports up to eight processor modules with cache sizes of
½, 1, or 2 MB, but all processor modules must have the same cache size. The
processor modules include the 400 and 450 MHz Pentium II Xeon, and the 500
and 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processors. Advanced processors will be
supported as each one is made available. Contact HP or your reseller for details.

Tools Required

These tools are required for removal and installation of additional processors:
T-15 and T-25 Torx
An anti-static service kit (3M 8501/8502/8503 or equivalent). This kit
includes a static-dissipating work surface, a chassis clip lead, and a wrist
strap.

Processor Configuration Guidelines

The HP NetServer supports up to 8 processor modules (4 CPU modules per
carrier). The first processor module is always installed in slot 1 of the Left
Processor Carrier. Any additional CPUs should be installed in the next available
slot, in ascending slot order from left to right. Tables 7-1 and 7-2 provide the
correct processor configurations.
