Failures of driven units at the front or rear of the engine which
increase the end lending can damage the thrust bearing.
Cylinder Block
Diagnosis of cylinder block malfunctions relative to cooling and
lubrication have been discussed in those respective system
Sections. The potential problems with the cylinders, the
camshaft bore and the crankshaft main journals have also been
discussed in this section.
Malfunctions of the block such as leaks, tappet bore wear, etc.
require a visual or dimensional inspection to isolate the
problem.
The cylinder bores are machined directly into the block during
production. The size and condition of the bore is critical to
engine performance and life. During repair, be sure to inspect
the bore carefully. It may also be necessary to de-glaze the
cylinder walls before reassembly.
