3 BGP/MPLS IP VPN Configuration
Example
After the VPN configuration, run the ping command with the -vpn-instance vpn-instance-
name parameter on PE. You can check whether the PE and the CEs that belong to the same VPN
can communicate with each other. If the ping fails, you can run the tracert command with the
-vpn-instance vpn-instance-name parameter to locate the fault.
If multiple interfaces bound to the same VPN exist on the PE, specify the source IP address, that
is, -a source-ip-address, when you run the ping or tracert the remote CE that accesses the peer
PE. If you do not specify a source IP address, the PE chooses the smallest IP address from the
interfaces bound to the VPN on the PE as the source address of the ICMP packet. If the CE does
not have a route to the selected address, the ICMP packet sent back from the peer PE is discarded.

3.13.3 Clearing BGP Statistics of VPN Instance

Context
BGP statistics of the VPN instance cannot be restored after you clear them. So, confirm the
action before you use the command.

3.13.4 Resetting BGP Connections

Context
Resetting the BGP connection interrupts VPN services. So, confirm the action before you use
the command.

NOTE
By default, after receiving a TTL timeout packet containing only a single MPLS label, the S9300 sends
back an ICMP response packet through the local IP routes (public network routes). However, no VPN route
exists in the public network routing table of the ASBR-PE. Therefore, the ICMP packet is discarded when
it is sent from the ASBR-PE or returns to the ASBR-PE.
In this case, the ping can be successful. To run the tracert command to view the correct path through which
the carrier network forwards the packet of the VPN, it is recommended that you run the undo ttl
expiration command on the S-PE of the HoVPN.
CAUTION
Run the reset bgp vpn-instance vpn-instance-name peer-address flap-info command in
the user view to clear statistics of the flapping information of the BGP peer in a specified
VPN instance.
Run the reset bgp vpn-instance vpn-instance-name dampening [ ip-address [ mask | mask-
length ] ] command in the user view to clear the dampening information of a VPN instance.
