PEs use VSIs for VPLS forwarding. PEs forward Ethernet frames through fully-connected PWs.

On a VPLS network, PEs must be fully connected. That is, a PW must be established between
any two PEs. Packets can be directly transmitted from the ingress PE to the egress PE, without
going through the intermediate PEs. Therefore, loops cannot occur between the PEs, and the
protocols such as Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), Multiple Spanning Tree Protocol (MSTP), and
Rapid Ring Protection Protocol (RRPP) that prevent loops are not needed.

6.2 VPLS Features Supported by the S9300

This section describes the VPLS features supported by the S9300.
Issue 03 (2009-08-20)
A Pseudo Wire (PW) is a virtual connection used to transmit frames between two PEs. PEs
establish and maintain PWs through signaling. PEs at both ends of a PW maintain the PW
status.
VSI
Each Virtual Switch Instance (VSI) provides separate VPLS services. A VSI implements
the Ethernet bridge function and can terminate PWs.
VC
A Virtual Circuit (VC) is a logical unidirectional circuit between two nodes. Two opposite
directional VCs constitute a PW. A VC can be used as a unidirectional PW in certain
applications.
AC
A CE accesses a PE through an Attachment Circuit (AC). An AC can be either a physical
link or a logical link. ACs transmit frames between CEs and PEs.
