IG NITION SYSTEM
All model s are equ ipped w ith a transistori zed ig-
nition syst em (Fig ure 12). Re fer to the wiring dia -
grams at the end of this boo k for the spec ific mod el
and year bei ng worked on.
Beca use of the solid-state design. problem s wi th
the transistorized system arc rare . If a probl em oc-
cur s,
it
genera lly ca use s a we ak spark or no spark at
all. An ignition system with a weak spark or no
spark is relatively easy to troubl eshoot.
It
is diffi -
cult, however, to troublesh oot an igniti on sys tem
that only malfun ctions when the en gin e is hot or un-
der load .
Ign ition System Precautions
Certain measures must be taken to protect the ig-
nition system.
I. Never disconnect any uf the electrical connec-
tors whi le the eng ine is running.
2. Apply dielectric grease to a ll e lectrica l co nnec -
tors prior
to
reconnectin g them . Thi s w ill he lp sea l
out moisture.
3. Make sure all electrical co nnecto rs are free of
corrosion and are secure ly co upled .
4 . Thc C Ol unit must alwa ys be mo unted securely
to the fram e.
Trou bleshooting Preparation
Refer to the w iring diagrams at the end of this
boo k fo r the speeific model bei ng wor ked on when
performing the followi ng.
I. Check the wiring harn ess for visi ble signs of
damage.
2. Make sure all co nnector s are properl y attached
to eac h other and locked in place .
3. Check all elect rical co mponents for a good
ground to the eng ine.
4 . Chec k a ll wiring for sho rt circuits or o pen cir-
cuits.
5. Mak e sure the fue l tank has an adeq uate supply
of fresh ga soline and is full.

6. Make sure the spark plug ca ble is pro perly con-
nected to the spark plug.
7. Remo ve the spark plug and examine it as de- ...-_ _
scribed in Chapter Three.
Sw itch Test
Test the ign ition swi tch and the engine auxiliary
shutoff sw itch as described in Chapter Eleven.

I. Rem o ve the front fende r cov er (F igure 13) as
described in Chapter Fifteen .
2. Disconn ect the white/b lue primary electrica l
co nnect or from the ignition coi l (Fig ure 14).
3. Measu re the igni tion co il primary resistance us-
ing an o hmmete r set at

between the primary w ire terminal and the coil
ground lug (Figure 15). Refer

4 . To measure the secondary resistance

a. Rem ove the spa rk plug cap from the second-
ary ca ble.

Using an ohmmeter set at

sis ta nce between the seco ndary ca ble and the
co il gro und lug (F igu re 15). Refer to Ta ble I
for test specifications.
e. Insta ll the cap onto the seco ndary ca ble.
" Connect the w hite/b lue pr imary electrica l con-
nector (Fig u re 14) on to the igni tion co il.
6. If the ignition coil does not meet any of these
spec ifica tio ns. the co il must be replaced . If the coi l
ex hibits visual damage, replace the co il as de-
sc ribed in Chapter Eleven.
7. Insta ll the fro nt fend er cover ( Figu re 13) as de -
sc ribed in C hap ter Fifteen .

I. Loca te the electrica l cables leadi ng from the en -
gine flywh eel C Ol stator to the CD! unit. Care fully
disco nnec t the exc iter co il and trigger coi l connec-
