I. Thoroughly
clean
the cams
haft in solvent. thcn
thoroughly dry.
Apply engine
oil
to
all
bearing
sur-
faces.
2.
Check
the
camshaft
lobes (A.
Figure
44) for
wear.
The lobes
should
not be scored
and
the
edges
should
be
square.
3. Measure the height of each lobe
(Figure
45)
with
a micrometer.
4. Check
each
camshaft
bearing jou
rnal
(B, Figure
44)
for
wear
and
scoring.
5.
Measure eac
h
camshaft
bearing
jo
urnal (Figure
46)
with
a
micrometer.
6. If the bearing
journals
are
severely worn or dam-
aged,
check
the
bearing journals
in the cylinder
head.
They
should not be scored or
excessively
worn.
If any
of
the bearing
surfaces
arc
worn or
scored
,
replace
the cy
linder
head.
7.
Make
sure
the
camshaft
o
il
holes
are open and
clear
(F
igure
47),
clean
them
out
if
necessary,
8.
Measure
the
camshaft
bearing bore
innerdiameter
(Fig
ure
48)
in the
cylinder
head
with
a
bore
gauge.
9. Calculate thc camshaft-to-cylinder head bore
clearance
as
follows:
