52.1 IPv6 Neighbor Table Overview

This chapt er int roduces t he I Pv6 neighbor t able.
An I Pv6 host is required t o have a neighbor t able. I f t here is an address t o be resolved or verified,
t he Swit ch sends out a neighbor solicit at ion m essage. When t he Swit ch receives a neighbor
advert isem ent in response, it st ores t he neighbor 's link- layer address in t he neighbor t able. You can
also m anually creat e a st at ic I Pv6 neighbor ent ry using t he Ba sic Se t t in g > I Pv6 > I Pv6
Configur a t ion > I Pv6 N e ighbor Se t up screen.
When t he Swit ch needs t o send a packet , it first consult s ot her t able t o det erm ine t he next hop.
Once t he next hop I Pv6 address is known, t he Swit ch looks int o t he neighbor t able t o get t he link-
layer address and sends t he packet when t he neighbor is reachable. I f t he Swit ch cannot find an
ent ry in t he neighbor t able or t he st at e for t he neighbor is not reachable, it st art s t he address
resolut ion process. This helps reduce t he num ber of I Pv6 solicit at ion and advert isem ent m essages.
