9.7 Protocol Based VLANs

Prot ocol based VLANs allow you t o group t raffic int o logical VLANs based on t he prot ocol you
specify. When an upst ream fram e is received on a port ( configured for a prot ocol based VLAN) , t he
Swit ch checks if a t ag is added already and it s prot ocol. The unt agged packet s of t he sam e prot ocol
are t hen placed in t he sam e prot ocol based VLAN. One advant age of using prot ocol based VLANs is
t hat priorit y can be assigned t o t raffic of t he sam e prot ocol.
Not e: Prot ocol based VLAN applies t o un- t agged packet s and is applicable only when you
use I EEE 802.1Q t agged VLAN.
For exam ple, port 1, 2, 3 and 4 belong t o st at ic VLAN 100, and port 4, 5, 6, 7 belong t o st at ic VLAN
120. You configure a prot ocol based VLAN A wit h priorit y 3 for ARP t raffic received on port 1, 2 and
3. You also have a prot ocol based VLAN B wit h priorit y 2 for Apple Talk t raffic received on port 6 and
7. All upst ream ARP t raffic from port 1, 2 and 3 will be grouped t oget her, and all upst ream Apple
Talk t raffic from port 6 and 7 will be in anot her group and have higher priorit y t han ARP t raffic,
when t hey go t hrough t he uplink port t o a backbone swit ch C.
