This sect ion provides t echnical background inform at ion on t he t opics discussed in t his chapt er.
9.11.1 Create an IP-based VLAN Example
This exam ple shows you how t o creat e an I P VLAN which includes port s 1, 4 and 8. Follow t hese
st eps:
1 Act ivat e t his prot ocol based VLAN.

Type t he port num ber you want t o include in t his prot ocol based VLAN. Type 1 .
3 Give t his prot ocol- based VLAN a descript ive nam e. Type I P- VLAN .
4 Select t he prot ocol. Leave t he default value I P.

Type t he VLAN I D of an exist ing VLAN. I n our exam ple we already creat ed a st at ic VLAN wit h an I D
of 5. Type 5 .
6 Leave t he priorit y set t o 0 and click Add.
Chapter 9 VLAN
Descript ion
Choose All conn e ct e d or Por t isola t ion.
All con n e ct e d m eans all port s can com m unicat e wit h each ot her, t hat is, t here are no virt ual
LANs. All incom ing and out going port s are select ed. This opt ion is t he m ost flexible but also
t he least secure.
Por t isola t ion m eans t hat each port can only com m unicat e wit h t he CPU m anagem ent port
and cannot com m unicat e wit h each ot her. All incom ing port s are select ed while only t he CPU
out going port is select ed. This opt ion is t he m ost lim it ing but also t he m ost secure.
Aft er you m ake your select ion, click Apply ( t op right of screen) t o display t he screens as
m ent ioned above. You can st ill cust om ize t hese set t ings by adding/ delet ing incom ing or
out going port s, but you m ust also click Apply at t he bot t om of t he screen.
These are t he ingress port s; an ingress port is an incom ing port , t hat is, a port t hrough which
a dat a packet ent ers. I f you wish t o allow t wo subscriber port s t o t alk t o each ot her, you m ust
define t he ingress port for bot h port s. The num bers in t he t op row denot e t he incom ing port
for t he corresponding port list ed on t he left ( it s out going port ) . CPU refers t o t he Swit ch
m anagem ent port . By default it form s a VLAN wit h all Et hernet port s. I f it does not form a
VLAN wit h a part icular port t hen t he Swit ch cannot be m anaged from t hat port .
These are t he egress port s; an egress port is an out going port , t hat is, a port t hrough which a
dat a packet leaves. I f you wish t o allow t wo subscriber port s t o t alk t o each ot her, you m ust
define t he egress port for bot h port s. CPU refers t o t he Swit ch m anagem ent port . By default
it form s a VLAN wit h all Et hernet port s. I f it does not form a VLAN wit h a part icular port t hen
t he Swit ch cannot be m anaged from t hat port .
Click Apply t o save your changes t o t he Swit ch's run- t im e m em ory. The Swit ch loses t hese
changes if it is t urned off or loses power, so use t he Sa ve link on t he t op navigat ion panel t o
save your changes t o t he non- volat ile m em ory when you are done configuring.
Click Ca n ce l t o begin configuring t his screen afresh.
