ELECTRIC STARTER
SERVICE INFORMATION
GENERAL
I
NOTICE
If the
current is kept flowing through the starter motor to /um it while the engine is not cranking over, the starter motor may be
damaged
Always tum the ignition switch OFF before servicing the starter motor. The motor could suddenly start. causing serious inJury.
The starter motor can be serviced with the engine in the frame
When checking the
starter system. always follow the sleps In the troubleshooting
(page 6-3).
A weak battery may
be
unable to turn the starter motor quickly enough. or supply adequate ignition current
Starter clutch servicing (page 12-5).
Ignition switch servicing (page 22-9),
Brake light switch inspection (page 22-15).
Gear position switch inspection (page 16-21).
Gear position switch replacement (page 16-54).
TROUBLESHOOTING
NOTE :
The starter motor should operate when the transmission is in neutral or when the transmission is in drive and the foot brake

applied .
