Discovering a SAN

The application discovers products, fabrics, and connections in a SAN. Through
this powerful tool, you can manage and monitor your SAN in real-time, ensuring
that any issues are resolved immediately. This chapter provides instructions for
configuring the discovery feature.

How Discovery Works

The application illustrates each product and its connections on the Physical Map
(topology). Once you log in and configure and turn on discovery, the application
discovers products connected to the SAN. See
for details.
When performing out-of-band discovery, the application connects to the switches
through the IP network and product information is copied from the SNS database
on the switch to the appliance.
To correctly discover all SAN products, you must specify each product's IP
address in the Discover Setup dialog box's Out-of-Band tab. If you do not
configure the application to directly discover the devices, the connections and
attached devices may not display correctly. Only fabrics that have HP switches as
the principal switch display. If a HP switch is being directly managed, but exists
in a fabric where the principal switch is a third-party device, another appliance is
not allowed to connect to and manage those devices.

Setting Up Discovery

Discovery is the process by which the application contacts the devices in your
SAN. In order to perform discovery, you need to specify the IP addresses for the
devices in your SAN.
