VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR (VSS)

VSS OPERATION OVERVIEW

The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
side of the transmission, accessed through the rear RH
wheel well.
The VSS is a Hall effect sensor. It operates on a three
wire circuit: 5 volt supply voltage, ground, and signal
back to the ECU. The Hall sensor is effectively a switch,
it closes when a tooth of the transmission output gear
passes within its operating range, and opens again when
the tooth moves out of range. The speed that the switch
opens and closes provides input to the ECU. The ECU
then interprets this switching into the speed the output
gear is rotating.
