THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR (TPS)

Operation Overview

The throttle position sensor (TPS) is used to indicate
throttle plate angle to the ECU.
Mounted on the throttle body and operated directly off
the end of the throttle shaft, the TPS works like a
rheostat, varying the voltage signal to the ECU in direct
correlation to the angle of the throttle plate. This signal is
processed by the ECU and compared to the internal pre-
programmed maps to determine the required fuel and
ignition settings for the amount of engine load.
NOTE: The correct position of the throttle body stop
screw is established and set at the factory. It is
calibrated for idle air flow. Do not loosen the throttle
body stop screw or alter its position in any manner.
If the stop screw is repositioned / adjusted, the
throttle body assembly must be replaced.

TPS Learn Function

The TPS automatically learns the idle setting at every
key-on
occurrence.
This
consistent calibration by compensating for TPS drift.
However, if the TPS reading is below .690 Vdc or above
.730 Vdc, the learn function is set to default to the last
successfully learned point and the "Check Engine" or
"MIL" indicator will illuminate. Performing the "TPS
Adjustment" procedure will remedy this problem.

Throttle Position Sensor Test

The throttle position sensor (TPS) reading can be
checked by using TPS Tester Adapter 2201519-A. The
throttle position sensor (TPS) is a non-serviceable item.
If it is faulty, it must be replaced.
1. Set up the TPS Test Adapter Harness (PU-47466),
and regulator (547927) according to the instructions.
Make sure that the 9 volt battery is new.
NOTE:
TPS Tester 2201519-A replaces the
existing TPS tester (PU-47082), which included
the 4010264 regulator. If your dealership has PU-
47082 and 4010264, you DO NOT need to order
2201519-A as a replacement.
