Chapter 1

Platform Architecture

1.1

System Overview

The AXP1440-C07 is based on an open standard platform, Advanced Telecommunications
®
Computing Architecture (AdvancedTCA
), for applications requiring a rugged bladed
server architecture. Originally designed for telecommunications, AdvancedTCA has been
adopted by several industries including military and industrial control. AdvancedTCA
employs the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) for system management
functions and the dual Ethernet star network which allows for communication between all
node blades using Ethernet.
The AXP1440-C07 is a high-availability platform with special locations for Shelf
Management Modules (SAM1620-D), fourteen 8U x 280mm slots, two 8U x 70mm Rear
Transition Modules (RTMs), Fan Tray Modules (FTMs), and Power Entry Modules (PEMs).
The AXP1440-C07 is a specialized system that has been ruggedized to withstand higher
shock and vibration requirements for rugged environments. Enhancements and significant
differences between the AXP1440-C07 and the AXP1440 are outlined in this chapter.
The following enhancements were added to stiffen the AXP1440-C07. Not all of the
stiffening enhancements are depicted in the illustrations in this chapter.
