5.1 Power-Up

To start the detector for the first time, turn on the main power switch on the rear panel of
the detector. The following sequence of events occurs when the detector is powered u p:
• For a short time, general information about the detector appears on the detector display:
device type, serial number, bootloader and firmware versions.
• The detector runs a series of internal tests. (The test takes about 30 seconds.) During
these self-diagnostics, all of the main components are checked. When the self test was
successful, the initial screen changes to the status screen (→ page 57).
If an error is detected, the detector is not ready for analysis. The Status LED on the front

panel is red and a message appears on the detector display. If the detector is operated
with Chromeleon, the message appears also in the Chromeleon Audit Trail.
Turn off the detector, take appropriate remedial action (→ page 95), and turn on the
detector again.
• If you have turned the detector off using the main power switch on the rear panel, wait at
least 30 seconds until you turn the detector on again. If you do not wait for 30 seconds, an
error with the detector electronics can occur. The error is detected during the self
diagnostics and a message appears on the display (→ page 96). During this error the
operation of the detector is not possible. Remedy the situation as described on page 96.
For routine operation, leave the main power switch on. For routine on/off control, use the
standby button on the front of the detector (→ page 23). Press and hold the button for
about one second to allow the detector to change the mode. Turn the main power switch
off when instructed to do so, for example, before performing a service procedure.
