UltiMate 3000 Series:
VWD-3100 and VWD-3400RS Variable Wavelength Detectors
Problem
The system has very high
backpressure.
High baseline drift
Page 110
Probable Cause
Fluidic parts in the system
(capillaries, filter, column) are
blocked by precipitate, or
capillaries are damaged by
bending.
The shipping locks for the optics
have not been loosened.
The column is contaminated.
The system is not sufficiently
equilibrated.
The eluents are degraded or
inhomogeneous.
The environmental conditions are
unstable.
The detector has not yet reached
the operating temperature.
The mobile phase is delivered in
circles.
The flow cell may be dirty.
The lamp is too old.
The lamp is new.
Remedial Action
Check the capillaries in the
system step by step from the
detector to the pump, remove
the blockage, or replace the
capillaries.
Verify that the shipping locks
for the optics have been
loosened (→ Fig. 8, page 34).
Clean or replace the column.
Flush the system until
equilibration. Usually, a
volume of 5–10 times the
column volume will be
sufficient.
Before you start an analysis,
homogenize eluents already in
their reservoir. Use fresh
solvent and check the eluent
filter frits. In aqueous solvents,
growth of microorganisms is
possible.
Make sure that the temperature
and the humidity are constant.
Avoid draft. Verify that the
lamp and flow cell covers are in
proper position and that the
front panel door is closed.
Allow the full detector warm-
up time (at least 60 minutes).
Direct the mobile phase to
waste.
Clean the flow cell
(→ page 125). If necessary,
replace the flow cell
(→ page 126).
Replace the lamp (→ pages 121
and 123).
Allow the new lamp to run for
at least 24 hours before the first
analysis.
Change the wavelength.
