How Are Scan Marks Added to Documents?

Scan marks are put on the documents before they are printed using an appro-
priate software program. Usually, this is done on a group of documents at one
time and is referred to as a job application, or just a job.
There are several ways to get scan marks on documents for a job.
Pitney Bowes offers a PC-based product called PB FIRST™DF (Clas-
sic) that enables you to add scan marks to your documents at the time
they are created so they can be read by the DI900/DI950 inserter (it also
allows you to setup scan marks for our other Pitney Bowes inserters).
What's nice is that once you've setup PB FIRST™ correctly to generate
the marks, the marks are printed to the proper specifications – no "experi-
mentation" is necessary. The program can create both OMR marks and
Barcode 3 of 9 symbologies.
Pitney Bowes also offers another PC-based product called PB FIRST™
PD that enables you to add the scan codes "after the fact" if your docu-
ments are saved as a PDF file. This may happen if the customer creates
the job file in one software program (and saves it as a PDF), but does not
have the expertise or resources to manually program the scan codes. Us-
ing PB FIRST™PD, the you can add the scan codes and the integrity level
that is needed while it is still in PDF format. When the job is printed, it can
be processed by the inserter as a scanning job. Again, once you've setup
PB FIRST™PD correctly to generate the marks, the marks are printed to
the proper specifications – no "experimentation" is necessary. The pro-
gram can create both OMR marks and Barcode 3 of 9 symbologies.
If the customer has a computer/IT department in their organization, they
may be able to add the scan marks themselves to their documents. You
will need to forward to them the scan code specifications from this guide
(see Chapter 4, Scan Code Specifications) so they have the information
necessary to program the codes for their documents.
IMPORTANT: Unless the customer has had previous experience working
with scan marks, we recommend that Pitney Bowes setup scan marks for
the customer (at a cost to be estimated). Pitney Bowes does not cover the
implementation of scan marks on a customer under the standard support
agreements for the DI900/DI950 inserter.
