Here is a good starting point for a barcode that is very robust and should be
easy to program. This assumes that the pages are printed and stacked in for-
ward order, i.e. that the address bearing page (the page that will face the win-
dow of the envelope) is on top when you hold the stack of paper right side up.
Character 1
bit 0 (lsb)
bit 1
[thus page 1 of a multipage document gets 2, middle page gets 0, last page
gets 1, 1 page document gets 3]
Characters 2-4
Sequential document number (piece ID or Match code) so the numbers would
go from 000 to 999 then repeat. Each page in a document gets the same
number. This helps the system guarantee that all the pages in each envelope
are part of the same document even if there are undetected double feeds or
printing or handling problems.
This could be done in either I 2 of 5 or Code 39. Remember Code 39 needs
a * at the start and end so if the first 3 documents are 1 page, 2 pages and 4
pages, the first 7 pages would get the following codes:
*3001* (first and last page of document 1)
*2002* (first page of document 2)
*1002* (last page of document 2)
*2003* (first page of document 3)
*0003* (middle page of document 3)
*0003* (middle page of document 3)
*1003* (last page of document 3)
If the pages are loaded face down, you will need to interchange the BOC
and EOC functions either in the barcode or in the inserter's scancode defini-
tion, because the inserter will see the last page first. If the system has a high
capacity sheet feeder, all jobs except top address Z fold will be loaded face
down. If the document is fed from the inserter's tower feeders, all jobs except
top address Z fold will be loaded face up.
