Rules/Guidelines When Using OMR

The bench mark, if present, must be located at one end of the mark set
(preferably the first mark read by the scanner).
*
The safety mark, if present, should be placed at the opposite end of the
OMR code with respect to the benchmark.
*
Multiple mark codes (WAS, MC) must be located in contiguous (adjacent)
marks. (Integer fields can be specified to be MSB first or LSB first by the
user.) Otherwise marks can occur in any sequence.
*
The system can read the marks in either direction on the page. For com-
plex OMR applications, both the benchmark and safety marks should be
used as first and last marks to enhance mailpiece integrity.
For any inserter job except a top address Z fold, it is best to print the bar-
codes near the bottom of the page because the sheets are fed bottom first
and this location gives the system more time to interpret the code, leading
to better performance.
Required Marks – BOC, EOC and one other mark to indicate the end of a
collation are required for all scanning applications.
Collation-Specific Marks – In general, marks that apply to an entire colla-
tion such as divert to deck, select feed, and document-to-document match
codes should appear on every sheet within that collation. This approach
increases scan reliability because the system can then can identify errors
in scanning a single sheet by comparing the results from each sheet to
ensure correct mark interpretation.
Sheet-Specific Marks – Marks such as wrap around sequencing, EOC,
BOC, and Parity are sheet specific and must be evaluated for each sheet
fed.
Mark Positions – While the mark positions float based upon the features
active in a given application, once an application has been defined, the
mark positions are physically fixed. It is important to ensure that the marks
are printed in the same physical location on every sheet.
Make certain the software used to generate marks does not automatically
delete blank lines. (Examples: Microsoft Word 6.0 and Alpha4 database.)
If a line with a blank scan position on it is eliminated, the system cannot
compensate for the elimination of a meaningful position. If necessary, add
a single letter identification to the marks. This ensures that the line prints
even.
A simple example is shown below.
