I 2 of 5 Character (Byte) and Bit Allocation

We start counting characters from the left with character (byte) 1. It does
not matter which end of the barcode the scanner sees first, it reads the
same either way.

Within an Interleaved 2 of 5 character the most significant bit is bit 2 and
the least significant is bit 0. **Note that I 2 of 5 uses the 4rth bit (bit 3) only
to accommodate additional ASCII binary digits needed for counting with
multi-bit functions for base 10 (see Appendix A - Base Code Theory).

Placement of Features

As the I2 of 9 code is made of 4 bits the maximum value that can be repre-
sented is 15 but as can be seen only 10 characters are represented and for
this reason bit 3 is designated a partially utilized bit (see figure below).
As this bit is only partially utilized, and numbers greater than 10 cannot be
represented by the I2 of 5 code, the system only allows bits 0, 1, 2 and 3 to be
used for designation of action features, selective feeds and integrity features.
For example, If you wish to allocate an EOC control only the bits shown in
italics can be used 0000
This is also true for counters so if using a binary counter of 4 characters long it
can be represented in any 1 or 2 bytes as shown by the *'s in the table below.

This is also true for CCD codes and means that all CCD codes regardless of
Codebase always start in bit 2 therefore no other feature can be allocated into
a field that contains a CCD field. As the largest number that I2 of 5 can repre-
sent is 9 the highest codebase that it can represent is 10 (BCD).
