Placement of Features

As the 3 OF 9 code is made of 6 bits the maximum value that can be repre-
sented is 63 but as can be seen only 43 characters are represented and for
this reason bit 5 is designated a partially utilized bit (see figure below).

As this bit is only partially utilized, and numbers greater than 43 cannot be
represented by the 3 of 9 code, the system only allows bits 0,1,2,3 and 4 to be
used for designation of action features, selective feeds and integrity features.
For example if you wish to allocate an EOC control only the bits shown in ital-
ics can be used: 000000
This is also true for counters so if using a binary counter of 5 characters long it
can be represented in any 1 or 2 bytes as shown by the *'s in the table below.

This is also true for CCD codes and means that all CCD codes regardless of
Codebase always start in bit 4 therefore no other feature can be allocated into
a field that contains a CCD field.
